Orlando, Fla. - Lynn University women's soccer player Kelsey Butler has been named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced the league office. Butler becomes the third Fighting Knight to earn conference weekly honors this season.
The Overland Park, Kans., native had one of her best games with the Blue & White's season on the line. Lynn's starting keeper made six saves to preserve a 2-0 shutout against rival Barry, helping LU earn a berth in the SSC Tournament. One of her biggest stops came in the second half off a Bucs corner kick when Melissa Madrid drilled a point-blank shot on goal. Butler made a diving stop to her right to keep the Knights ahead.
Butler has six shutouts this year while Lynn has posted seven overall, the most since 2000. The freshman is 7-7 with a 1.40 goals-against average, 61 saves and a .744 save percentage.
Lynn travels to Lakeland, Fla., on Tuesday, November 3, to battle Florida Southern at 7 p.m. in the first round of the SSC Championship. The winner will face Rollins on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla.
