Intercollegiate Athletics Mission

Student Athletes - Lynn UniversityThe role of the athletics program is to support the overall university mission. Intercollegiate competition has been an integral part of higher education in America for more than a century. Lynn University endorses the concept of “Athletics as Education” described in the policy statement adopted by the American Council on Education in 1984, which cites key contributions of athletics to the individual, the institution, and society as a whole, as follows:

“Among these contributions are the development of discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence of individuals who participate, the improvement and substance of institutional reputations and morale, and the heightening of visibility that aids in recruitment of students and financial contributions.”

The basic premise underlying these very positive contributions is that athletics is, and must continue to be, an important part of the educational process.

It is appropriate to recognize in the admissions process the skills of a talented athlete, in the same way music, drama, or debate skills are recognized in others.

Such students are admitted, however, only when the university is satisfied that the student has the potential to realize the full educational benefits of the institution. The university is committed to providing advising and academic support services to assist the student-athlete achieve that potential.

The athletics program is important to the development of a vibrant campus atmosphere. The University is striving to develop alumni and external support, an area in which athletics can play a important role. Athletic activities attract community interest and support through high media visibility and entertainment value. Athletic activities unify students, faculty and staff, alumni, and the community toward a common interest. Coupled with high standards of integrity and commitment to academics, the athletics program can be a major contributor to the image and reputation of the university.
